Hey, thanks to everybody who made this past weekend of shows SWEET. Love to Piranha Party!, Belle Noire, Manzanita Falls, The Y Axes, crashfaster, and Matthew Joseph Payne.

I think Matthew Joseph Payne literally broke my brain with awesomeness Sunday night—he secretly orchestrated a three-piece trombone part for our song “Reincarnate” and he and his musicians whipped it out mid-song, completely to our surprise. I think I can safely say that will never happen again in my life…see you on May 30th in Santa Cruz when we open for Mice Parade! Tickets here. -K

Cartoon Bar Fight

San Jose’s Cartoon Bar Fight will depart for a teeny tiny tour next week. Spanning just over a week, the eerie pop band will hit usual haunts like San Francisco, but also make more out-of-the-way stops in places like Hayward and Santa Cruz.

The band will use the tour as a place to premiere tracks from their upcoming concept album, due later this year. They’ll also be teaming up with a star-studded roster of Bay Area up-and-comers (or already-there-ers), including Manzanita Falls, The Y Axes, Piranha Party! and more. “On their debut full-length Reincarnate, San Jose five-piece Cartoon Bar Fight take familiar folk-pop sounds and glaze them with a thick coating of goth atmosphere; think Ingrid Michaelson as possessed by the spirit of Disintegration-era Robert Smith.  The best moments on Reincarnate come when the omnipresent gloom almost threatens to envelop the music but is just barely kept at bay; this is exemplified by “Fox And The Grapes,” where a gorgeous “if I were you” refrain is smeared black and left in the late-afternoon sun to dry.  Occasionally, the band wanders a bit too far into the clouds, particularly on “Hymn” and “The Valley”—both fine songs but underwhelming given that the seven preceding songs create largely the same mood.  Yet on the surreal title track, the band finds its way back into the light and ends the album on a high (and highly promising) note.” -Daniel Bromfield, SF Rebirth Blog
